The InterReligious Task Force on Central America cannot work on every issue that affects every county in Latin America. Therefore, we have chosen to remain focused on the counties to which the United States has historically provided military and economic aid and that the Cleveland community has had a close connection with. We understand that all the countries in Latin America feel the negative effects of militarism and globalization, which include ecological destruction, privatization of utilities, public services and other resources, increase in sweatshops and diminished sustainability because of free trade policies initiated and promoted by the US. Specifically, we do not work on the countries of Belize, Costa Rica, and Panama, not because there are not issues of human rights abuses or that they are not affected U.S. policy, but because we cannot do everything.
